| Subject: Hindenburg VideoWe make fun of the Germans for building an airship filled with millions of cubic feet of hydrogen gas and say how stupid it was. Yet today we think nothing about boarding a thin-skinned airplane filled with tens of thousands of pounds of explosive jet fuel that hurls through the air at hundreds of miles an hour. When an accident happens on an airplane, everyone dies. In this accident here, amazingly, 2/3 of the people on the Hindenburg when it crashed survived. On an airplane if a spark happens in the fuel tank, there is simply a gigantic explosion instantly destroying the airplane. Here the zeppelin actually lasted long enough to allow people to escape.

| Subject: Hindenburg videoDon't know anything about what looks like something hitting the ship... But the fact that someone has overdubbed extra sound effects - crunching metal and such - to announcer Herb Morrison's eyewitness description (which was recorded for radio broadcast entirely seperately from the film footage, and which I've heard before minus the effects) makes me suspect some tampering...

| Subject: the hindenburg explosion It seems to me that the ship was already on fire. But if you watch the video carefully, You will see something enter and hit the ship just as its exploding. Could this be an r,p,g, or somethig to sabotage the ship as well? don baltronis.

| goodyear blimp? don't be stpid.. this is LZ129, the biggest aircraft to ever fly.
The only reason it blew up is because the Americans wouldn't sell helium to the Zeppelin company. They were scared that if Zeppelins were flame proof then the Nazis would have the most deadly weapons in the world at their command.
If airships were to be used again today, with modern technology, they'd be able to be huge (2000 feet long, at least) and very safe. Terrorists couldn't use then to blow buildings up and they couldn't hijack them the way aeroplanes can be targeted.
Also, they could be solar powered for the main part, with the entire upper skin being used as generators.

| Yeah - I'd heard that the americans refused to sell helium to the germans which is what forced them to this stupidity...

| Subject: theories of madnesshmm, im usually the last person to scream "CONSPIRACY" but check it out - 1937, some of the richest ppl in germany aboard a craft made of highly flammable gas (the equivalent of driving real fast in a MG Roadster made of dynamite) - pop, crackle crackle, hello estates worth millions, hello fatherland. Wealth is fun!
Its just such a weird thing.

| Subject: it's the skin's fault.Well, now we know, if they had just used a different skin, it would have kept the fire inside the blimp, and no one would have gotten hurt
| |
| Subject: Johannes?Jason, you're a stupid asshole.
| |
| Subject: commentThe skin may have helped but hydrogen _IS_ highly flammable
| |
| Uh, guys? They painted the ship with aluminum oxide. The skin was aluminum oxide-impregnated. You know what else they use aluminum oxide and iron oxide in?
The Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters, as the fuel.

| Yeah - it's the hyrdogen... this is why the hindenburg is so famous... because it was so stupid of them. But everyone only realised it was stupid after the event. Everyone was left scratching their heads wondering why they didn't think of it before.
|
| Subject: JohannesIt was not the skin, it was full of highly flammable hydrogen gas. Ever take a chemistry course?
| |
| Subject: Hindenberg skin Recall that is was the highly flammable SKIN of the Hindenberg that caused the fire. Look closely at the skin - its the skin that's being eaten by the fire.
